SULOM, Clubs reach compromise

Super League of Malawi said on Friday it had reached compromise with clubs over broadcasting rights and the annual general meeting row that almost threw the 2022 league kickoff in doubt.

SULOM General Secretary Williams Banda told the press that the two parties reached a well thought after concession, describing the negotiations as cordial and mature.

On Wednesday, Super League clubs led by Silver Strikers, Mighty Tigers, Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers top officials ganged up and threatened to boycott the 2022 season kickoff if SULOM did not hold the AGM as well as settle their broadcasting rights dating back to 2018.

We have also resolved to consolidate calculations for broadcasting rights dating back as far as 2018 and that going forward, clubs will be drawing their cut every month”, he added.

Nyasa Big Bullets Chief Executive Officer Sugzo Nyirenda who represented the aggrieved clubs said the compromise means the disagreements are now water under the bridge, saying the ball is now in SULOM’s court to honour the contents of the agreement.

“We are glad that SULOM has listened to our concerns and this joint press conference is a huge testimony that right now we have decided to leave no one behind.

We have been clear on broadcasting rights outstanding dues to clubs, that we do not support the idea of granting exclusive TV rights to Mpira TV and the need to have an AGM as soon as possible among others”, Nyirenda said.

The agreement means all matches scheduled for the 2022 season kickoff this weekend will precede as earlier announced.

Nyasa Big Bullets starts the defense of the title with a super clash against city rivals Mighty Wanderers FC at the Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

There will also be two more games pitting Karonga United and Kamuzu Barracks at Karonga Stadium and Ekwendeni Hammers versus TN Stars at the Mzuzu Stadium.
