Southern region premeir league outfit Hangover United will now be called Blantyre City Football Club.
The club President Assad Jussab confirmed the change of name during a press briefing held on Thursday in Blantyre.
Jussab said the name change has been effected in honour of the country’s commercial city of Blantyre.
He said: “Blantyre city has a rich history and we believe the decision to name the club after our beloved city diminishes the city’s hangover.
“We promise to make this city proud by ensuring that our discipline on and off the field reflects its beauty.”
During the briefing Jussab also unveiled two corporate companies that have partnered with the club in its commercialisation drive.
“I am glad to announce that in our quest to fully commercialize we have Consumables Centre and KNQR as our partners.
These partners will play a pivotal role in our drive as they will be responsible for the distribution of our merchandise such as team jerseys and replicas as well as provision of nutritious foods to our players”, he added.
Southern Region Football Association Chairman Raphael Humba described the development as remarkable.
“Hangover United, now Blantyre City FC is a role model to our teams when it comes to commercialization largely seen as a task for elite teams.
Let me commend the club’s management for leading the way and i urge other premier league teams to emulate the same”, Humba said.
Early this month, the now defunct Hangover United Football Club announced that it had joined the race to commercialization with the hope that the idea will professionalize the lower league.
This it said is in line with the team’s goal of becoming the most technically advanced football team in Malawi that consistently provides and develops the youth with opportunities to excel in football at a professional level.
