Football Association of Malawi has praised President Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice Saulos Chilima’s decision to watch last Sunday’s Flames Group D 2023 Afcon qualifiers opening match with Ethiopia at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Chakwera and Chilima were part of tens of thousands of spectators that jammed parked the Bingu National Stadium, watching and supporting the Flames as they burned the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia.
Gabadihno Mhango twice scored from the spot kick to help Malawi begin the qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory in front of an electrified crowd.
Due to the unprecedented spectator’s turn-up, FAM managed to gross over 72 million kwacha, the highest revenue recorded for BNS.
“We would like to extend profound gratitude to the State President, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and the Vice President, Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima for leading and inspiring Malawians to come to Bingu National stadium to support their national team,” reads FAM’s media statement on Malawi Vs Ethiopia gate revenue report.
We also thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports led by Hon. Richard Chimwendo Banda, MP, for ensuring that the national team receives the necessary government funding and support.”
According to the report, a total of 33, 328 spectators purchased the advance tickets for the match.
