No nomination for Gabadinho as Zwane wins SAFJA Men’s Footballer of the season gong

Malawi’s top striker Frank Gabadinho Mhango has failed to make the grade on the list of five players nominated for the Association’s inaugural Men’s Footballer of the season award.

While the Flames’ red hot goal scorer’s name is missing on the list, his 2019/2020 Absa Premier League joint top goal scorer Peter Shalulile formerly of Highlands Park is up for the gong.

Completing the list are Mamelodi Sundowns duo Themba Zwane and Hlompho Kekana, Kaizer Chiefs duo Samir Nurkovic and Lebogang Manyama.

Gabadinho had a grand maiden season as a Buccaneer player since moved in from his former club his former club Bidvest Wits.

During the 2019/2020 season, Gaba played a total of 25 games for Pirates in the Absa Premier League in which he had 24 starts at an average of 71 minutes per game, scoring 16 goals, flashed 7 yellow cards but finished the season without being slapped with matching orders.

Gabadinho, a product of Nyasa Big Bullets left the club in 2013 for South Africa’s Bloemfontein Celtic, amidst controversies and claims of under hand dealings regarding his move.

In his first season at Celtic, Mhango was named Player’s Player of the year and he managed to score at least nine goals that season.

In a statement monitored on, SAFJA chairman Velile Mnyandu says the association’s executive committee, in conjunction with four prominent local commentators Mark Gleeson, Thabiso Thema, Kevin Evans and Duane Dell’Oca, decided on the five nominees.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns top player Themba Zwane has scooped the SAFJA’s men’s footballer of the season gong. Zwane played a total of 41 matches, scored 14 goals, provided 12 assists, 7 yellow cards and cumulatively played for 3335 minutes.

For winning the gong, the Zwane walks away with a trophy‚ a photo collage of their 2019/20 season and media training for an amateur club of their choice.

SAFJA is a newly established body which currently has 1  08 members, all of whom will decide the eventual winner on Tuesday, 29 September 2019.
