Organisers of the Blantyre Marathon have announced that the 2021 edition of the competition will place.
The Marathon failed last year due to Corona Virus-Covid 19 pandemic that held all sports activities in Malawi.
But Unkhankhu Ng’oma who is Marketing and Communications Officer for the organizing committee said the competition this year will take place and on 20th June 2021.
“I would like to encourage all athletes in males and females section to prepare very well for this competition.
“In the third edition, we are also encouraging the athletes to break the record which was set by Henry Moyo at 2 hours 18 minutes back in 2002.” Ng’oma said.
He also added that there will also be other activities that will spice the event such as aerobics and fun-run.
“We will start from NBS Bank in Blantyre, pass through Blantyre town, Machinjiri and end at Kamuzu Stadium.” Said Ng’oma.
He said the selection of the month of June as opposed to previous editions is to respond to calls by athletes.
“In the past, athletes complained about hot weather conditions as we used to do it in months of October and others, but this year, we have decided to put the competition in June where it’s cold.”
“We have also put incentives that we think will help reward athletes very well as they participate in this competition.
But Ng’oma was also quick to mention that the committee will continue monitoring Covid-19 pandemic situation to determine the flow of events.
“Just in case we will still have Covid-19, we will make sure all preventive measures are adhered to.” He said.
He also said the committee is still organizing on partners for this year’s competition.
“Like we did in 2019, we partnered with Kachere Rehabilitation, and this year we are still consulting.
“Understanding that we have social responsibility to do, we will come with all the details as we go.” Ng’oma concluded.
The Blantyre Marathon started in 2018 and takes place under Malawi National Council of Sports.
